STANDARDS REVIEW COMMITTEE

REQUEST FOR REVIEW OF SURVEY MAP

The State of Wisconsin in an effort to protect the public has passed laws for the licensing of the practice of land surveying.  The rules governing the practice of land surveying are found in the Wisconsin Administrative Code, State Statutes and local ordinances.  The Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors (WSLS) is interested in the quality of the maps being prepared by land surveyors.  The interest is in both the adherence of the minimum standards and the education of its members.

The Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors was founded in 1952 as a professional organization dedicated to the following objectives and goals.

  • To promote the common good and welfare of its members
  • To advance the profession of land surveying by promoting high standards of practice and ethical conduct.
  • To encourage and support educational programs for its members
  • To promote a better understanding and appreciation of how surveyors serve the public interests.

To accomplish these interests WSLS has formed a committee to review survey maps to see that they meet the minimum standards in the Administrative Code and to see where land surveyors need improvement.  The Standards Review committee offers this service to individuals wishing to have their survey maps reviewed.  This committee is also there to serve public, private, or other individuals that have concerns and/or questions over any map completed as to whether that survey map complies with the requirements prescribed by law.  While the Wisconsin Administrative Codes are designed to enable the profession to regulate itself, this committee, on the other hand, is intended as a means to inform and educate practitioners on the proper interpretation and adherence to those regulations.  The goal is for all survey maps to meet the minimum standards for Land Surveying throughout the State of Wisconsin; that all the standards are uniformly applied, and that those standards are uniformly reviewed for compliance thereto.

Submittals will be processed as follows:

  1.  All submittals will be reviewed by a panel composed of a minimum of three impartial professional committee members.
  2.  The committee will report the results of the review.  The report will contain any positive comments as well as deficiencies in the map and may also include other options to obtain compliance with A-E 7 and applicable state statutes.
  3.  A report outlining the findings of the panel will be sent to the person who submitted the request and/or to the surveyor whose map is being reviewed.
  4.  The committee reserves the right to forward documentation to the Ethics and Standards of Practice committee if deemed necessary for clarification or further action.
  5.  Based on the reviews, the committee may suggest changes to the minimum standards in A-E 7 and State Statutes.
