    Position: Surveyor

    Use your expertise and technical knowledge as a Surveyor for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation!  The Division of Transportation System Development’s Southwest Region is seeking someone with a background in surveying to fill a surveying technical expert role.  This vacancy can be filled at either the entry or senior level (see below for more details on qualifications for each level) and can be located in either La Crosse or Madison.

    Position Summary

    This position specializes in being the survey technical expert for the Southwest Region.  In this role, you will know how to perform WisDOT types of field surveys, use the various types of survey equipment and be able to support other region users, such as project development staff assigned survey equipment on construction projects.  In addition, this position will assist the survey and plat coordinators with other survey or plat related work assignments.  Such work may include the development of Transportation Project Plats (TPPs) right-of-way plats for highway improvements, and reviewing and interpreting legal descriptions, as well as project plans.  This position requires expertise in making survey calculations and in using C3D, Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD, Bluebeam or other specialized computer programs to develop highway right of way plats.

    The work performed is under the guidance of the Survey or Plat Coordinators who may review and/or stamp work accordingly as a Professional Land Surveyor.  A valid Wisconsin Professional Land Surveyor registration is helpful but is not a requirement of the position.  Employees in this position are highly encouraged to pursue their PLS and/or attend coursework required of this credential.  Link to requirements here.

    Salary Information

    The entry level is in schedule-range 14-15, the senior level is in schedule-range 14-14.  The entry level has an annual salary of $42,640-$48,422, the senior level has an annual salary of $54,080-$62,400, plus excellent benefits.  Level of position and salary will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate at the time of hire.  A twelve month probationary period is required.  Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

    Job Details

    WisDOT does not sponsor work visas.  Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

    Prior to any appointments for position(s) filled from this announcement, candidates may be subject to a comprehensive criminal background check with may include FBI fingerprinting.

    Frequent (1-2 days per week) independent travel within the Southwest Region required for meetings or field reviews/surveys.

    Occasional independent travel within the state required for meetings and professional training.

    Qualifications

    Candidates qualified at the entry level must have coursework/training OR experience in ALL of the following:

    • Mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry
    • Principles and/or practices of land surveying
    • Computer programs for survey and/or Computer Aided Design and Drafting System (CADDS) applications (i.e. Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation)
    • Introduction to or use of survey equipment (i.e. Total stations, GPS, levels)

     Candidates qualified at the senior level will have the following:

    • 3-5 years field experience using GPS, Totals station etc.
    • Significant experience using C3D/AutoCAD and/or like survey related software
